Thinking Inside the Box

Geboren in 1967 als Franklin Christenson Ware in Omaha, Nebraska, publiceerde de kunstenaar al vroeg in het avant-garde tijdschrift 'RAW', dat werd geredigeerd door Art Spiegelman en Françoise Mouly. Begin jaren negentig lanceerde hij zijn 'Acme Novelty'-serie, waarin hij zijn belangrijkste personages vastlegde.

Chris Ware tekent met perfectionistische nauwgezetheid en technische precisie. Zowel qua verhaal als qua vorm zijn zijn boeken allesomvattende kunstwerken, waarbij hij verantwoordelijk is voor alles van de typografie tot het bindwerk. Deze tentoonstelling laat zien hoe hij via verkennende voorbereidende schetsen tot zijn zorgvuldig gecomponeerde beeldreeksen komt die doen denken aan bouwtekeningen. Vanuit verschillende perspectieven en binnen een geconcentreerde dichtheid komt de bezoeker meer te weten over menselijke tekortkomingen, communicatieproblemen en teleurstellingen.

Bijzonder indrukwekkend is de uitvoerig geproduceerde stripreeks 'Building Stories' uit het jaar 2012. Dit is een verzameling van 14 boeken, in zeer verschillende formaten, die geen vooraf bepaalde volgorde hebben. Naast zijn grote graphic novels, zoals 'Jimmy Corrigan' (2000) en 'Rusty Brown' (2019), werkt Chris Ware voor de pers, met name 'The New Yorker', en heeft hij animaties bedacht gebaseerd op zijn personages Quimby the Mouse en Rusty Brown.

Stripdagen Haarlem and 37PK present ‘Chris Ware: Thinking Inside the Box’. The retrospective, developed in close collaboration with Chris Ware himself, who is currently the USA’s most significant comics author and cartoonist, shows the full richness of his oeuvre. Not only is an impressive quantity presented of original works by this exceptional artist who was awarded the Grand Prix at the 2021 Angoulême International Comics Festival, but also objects, such as models and puppets , which complement his stories in the third dimension.

In the early 1990s, he launched his ‘Acme Novelty’ series, in which he established his most important characters.

Chris Ware draws with perfectionist meticulousness and technical precision. In terms of both narrative and form, his books are all-encompassing artworks, in which he is responsible for everything from the typography to the binding. This exhibition demonstrates how, via exploratory preliminary sketches, he arrives at his carefully composed sequences of images that are reminiscent of construction drawings. From a wide variety of perspectives and within a concentrated density, the visitor finds out about human inadequacies, communication difficulties and disappointments.

The elaborately produced set of comics ‘Building Stories’ from the year 2012 is particularly impressive. This is a collection of 14 books, in very different formats, which have no predetermined order. Alongside his major graphic novels, such as ‘Jimmy Corrigan’ (2000) and ‘Rusty Brown’ (2019), Chris Ware works for the press, particularly ‘The New Yorker’, and has conceived animations based on his characters Quimby the Mouse and Rusty Brown.
